Our WI was founded in 1949 by Mary ‘Polly’ Cartland who lived in Poolbrook. She was a little eccentric but was generous with her time and very involved in village life. She suffered the loss of her husband in the Great War, and her two sons were killed within a day of each other in WW11. Her daughter Barbara Cartland became a universally known novelist selling million of books. Barbara’s daughter Raine become Diana Princess of Wales stepmother.

Initially meeting at the Foley Institute - now Poolbrook Village Hall - our WI became so popular that a new branch named Malvern Common had to be formed. They met at St. Andrews Church where todays Poolbrook WI meet.
